About Rady Children’s

The hospital provides care to 214,216 children in the region that is 91% of the total population. The hospital has a team of more than 4,700 employees, over 500 volunteers, and 1,250 auxiliary members. In a year this hospital trains 300 residents, 200 medical students and 100 fellows through collaboration with UC San Diego School of Medicine.

The hospital is stepping towards becoming a world-renowned research center. Over the years it has made 600 clinical trials along with ongoing research work. Getting to Rady hospital can be done by a train, taxi or bus. From Old Town Transit Center it will take you 34 minutes to reach the hospital. When you are at Kearny Mesa Transit Center it will take you 19 minutes to reach the hospital.

People that take a bus from Normal Heights San Diego take almost one hour to reach Rady Children’s hospital. Also, it will take about an hour from UCSD San Diego to the hospital if you are using a bus. From Cherokee Avenue, the bus will take up to 1 hour 20 minutes to reach the hospital. Bus-120 is the only bus that transports to Rady hospital.

Travel to Rady Children’s Hospital for a cochlear implant

A Cochlear implant is a substitute for hearing aids. They come in handy when the patient has profound hearing loss and difficulties in speech perception. The implant is done to transmit sound directly to the auditory nerve. A cochlear implant will not give back the hearing abilities but will improve speech clarity.

Rady children’s hospital has an objective of giving each child the tools required to understand spoken a language and communicate effectively with confidence. Evaluation has to be done to determine if the child should receive a cochlear implant. A detailed analysis is done on the child by the following medical professionals:

The evaluation consist of the following:

  1. Audiological evaluation

This evaluation will consist of small tests that test child’s sound perception. An otoscopy is done that is a visual inspection of the ear. An acoustic reflex test is done to find information in relation to the wellbeing of the auditory nerve.

An auditory brainstem evoked response test is performed that measures the response of the child to mid and high frequencies. An auditory steady-state response evaluation is done that tests response from low to high frequencies. Lastly, the pure tone air and bone-conducting testing are performed that tests the ear specific frequencies.

  1. Speech-language evaluation

A test is performed to determine the child’s level of communication before the implant.

  1. Developmental evaluation

A test is performed to determine the child’s cognitive levels, attention, and behavior.

  1. Educational evaluation

Evaluation is performed about the child’s support within the education system. This is to make sure the child attends an institution that will allow proper use of the implant.

  1. Medical evaluation

A CT scan, MRI scan, vision testing, genetic testing is performed along with vaccinations.
